October 5 - 9th
This week students were busy learning about some of the ways potatoes are used. We tasted different flavours of potato chips and discovered that "Dill Pickle" was the most popular flavour and plain was the least favourite. On Thursday we also tasted some of the delicious ways potatoes are served in our homes. Thanks so much to the parent volunteers who prepared the hashbrowns, potato salad, fat fries, yams, cheesy potatoes and the mashed, scalloped, and baked potatoes that we enjoyed tasting. We discovered that the most popular potato dish was "cheesy potatoes" and the least favourite was "potato salad". During the week we wrote some thank you cards which we created using potato stamps. We also began a project in the computer lab. Students are working in partners to create a "photo story" about our trip to the potato farm. We also created some cute centre pieces for our Thanksgiving tables this weekend using the heart shaped potatoes donated to us from the McIntosh's potato farm. Check them out in our photo story highlighting the things we are thankful for. Hopefully you all enjoy your Thanksgiving weekend. We all have so much to be thankful for!
September 28 - Oct. 2nd
This week we continued our study of plants and discovered that a sunflower can produce 900 - 1200 seeds. Wow! We also had the opportunity to visit a potato farm in the Graysville area, thanks to the MacIntosh family (Glen, Pam & Derek). Also thanks to Mrs. Sheila Wiebe for her help in organizing and showing students around the farm. As well the trip would not have been possible without the wonderful parent volunteers who drove us to the farm. The students had a super time and in the upcoming week(s) will have the opportunity to use this experience to make some curricular connections in science, math, ELA and art.
September 14 - 24th
For the past two weeks we have been learning some routines of the 3N classroom. We have learned the following Super Scholar jobs: Morning Editor, Nouns & Verb sorting, Sentence Building, Alphabetizing and Number Sequencing. Each week five students are Super Scholars and ther task is to complete one of the above jobs each morning. Then as a class we celebrate their work. We have also been learning some of the daily math jobs we will be doing this year. So far we have learned about "Number of the Day" and "What's Inside". Students have also been learning how to do something called "Conditioning Facts'. It is a method used to help students become more proficient at recalling the basic addition and subtraction facts. So far we have reviewed our doubles and what I call "easy tens". In science we are learning about "PLANTS". We worked in small groups to explore and examine "sunflowers". We measured its stem and the circumference of its head, we identified the roots, stem, leaves, petals and seeds. It was a very hand-on experience. Thanks so much to Mrs. Kim Runne for providing us with 5 fantastic sunflowers.
September 9 - 11th
This week we had fun getting to know one another and had a chance to get settled into our new desks and a new classroom (for the students anyway). We also had a chance to get familiar with the Balanced School Day. We are learning to choose healthy food for our nutrtion breaks and are aiming to eat from at least 3 of the 4 food groups at each meal.
